1,200 staff will be deployed by SMRT during shortened service hours on the ground at ten stations on the eastern part of the East-West Line (EWL), starting 5 January, as reported by Channel NewsAsia.

The affected hours will see 20% more staff, including bus captain, crowd marshals and station personnel deployed on the ground to handle queries and provide information to commuters.

SMRT director of operations support and resource management Vincent Gay told Channel NewsAsia: “What we experienced in the western sector is actually a lot of (commuters) asking how to do this and that. So, we want to give a bit more so-called human interaction with commuters in terms of how to travel.”

An increase in the number and size of signs around the stations will also be used to inform commuters about the closures.


In addition to shorter service hours, the 10 stations between Paya Lebar and Pasir Ris will be closed for full days on Jan 21 and Jan 28, according to a statement by SMRT Corporation.


One of the stations affected by the closures is Changi Airport. Commuters travelling from the airport can take two shuttle services which leave from Gate 8 of Terminal 3’s departure hall.

Marshals will be stationed at Gate 8 to guide people to queues for the shuttle services.

The two bus shuttle services, Shuttle 8 and Express 12, will follow the same fare structure as trains.

Shuttle 8 terminates at Tanah Merah station, while Express 12 goes directly to Bugis station.
