Deborah Mannas, group head of human resources, Wallem Group talks about building a rewards system to drive excellence.
Mannas takes an example to reinforce the importance of rewards. “You join mileage programmes just for the points – they are immediate and they are certain.”
“This is a fundamental principle of human behaviour – if you want somebody to do something, make a case for it. If excellence is what you want to drive, you have to make a case for the positive of it over the negative.”
The first panel discussion today sees HR experts coming together to for an analysis of what compensation and salary indicators are driving rewards strategies this year, in a conversation moderated by Anthony Wong, editor of Human Resources Hong Kong (extreme left).

Ng points out the best way to stay in touch with employee needs is to simply ask them. “Every year we have a survey to understand the needs of the staff, and we ask them what kind of benefits they want. Other than salary, what else would be useful for them, we encourage them to let their senior management know.”
Founder & CEO of CXA, Rosaline Koo, kickstarts day one of the conference with a keynote on employee benefits trends in Asia, offering up ideas for delegates to simplify the benefits process.
“What are your healthy employees saying,” Koo asks the delegates. She quotes: “Insurance is only for those who are sick and go to the hospital, so how does it help me? Employees who are married and are covered under their spouse’s insurance are asking, why can’t my insurance money be freed up, since it can’t be claimed twice?”
She goes on to provide possible solutions for HR and rewards leaders to simplify and manage such processes better.
Human Resources‘ regional editor Aditi Sharma Kalra opens the conference to welcome our delegates and partners.
“We have hosted this conference in Singapore for three years now, and today our team is proud to bring the successful format here in Hong Kong. Because when it comes to rewarding employees, the challenges are quite similar across the region.”
We’re looking forward to meeting everyone at Employee Benefits Asia 2015 Hong Kong at The Mira. See you soon!
