The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) plans to expand the implementation of its apprenticeship programme to include more than 100 companies and 700 trainees, Bernama reported.

According to MIDA’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Zabidi Mahbar, the agency will open the programme nationwide from next month onwards to attract the participation of more companies and trainees with potential.

The programme – a collaboration between MIDA, the education ministry, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers and the Skills Development Department – is a two-year initiative targeted at form three assessment (PT3) school leavers.

Speaking after witnessing the Apprenticeship Programme 2019 Convocation Ceremony yesterday, Zabidi said: “The programme is based on the German training model of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) where 70% of the training is undertaken in industry and 30% at training institutes.”

Further, he described the programme as a fast-track one which aimed to prepare skills workers who can immediately enter the industry.

According to Bernama, the first phase involved five companies: Royal Selangor International, Top Glove Corporation, Gethi Engineering, Fire Fighter Industry and YKGI Holdings. It also involved three vocational colleges: Setapak Vocational College, the Klang Vocational College and Sungai Buluh Vocational Collage.
