Last Monday, Leon Perera raised a parliamentary question to Singapore’s minister for manpower on the proportion of new jobs created in each of the last five years which requires a university degree.
In his response, minister for manpower Lim Swee Say said that Ministry of Manpower (MOM) does not collect data on new jobs created by specific qualification requirements, including university degrees.
He commented: “This is because such data may not meaningfully reflect the quality of a job or the responsibilities associated with it.”
On that note, he added that the ministry encourages companies to adopt progressive HR practices and focus on skills and competencies as the “key yardstick in the recruitment and development of workers”, beyond academic grades or qualifications – Committee on the Future Economy’s recommendations.
